The Biggest Tree in Burlington
Her prints were shipped to buyers across the country and the story was featured in multiple VT Digger articles.
The biggest tree in Burlington happened to be in the backyard of Murray’s rental from 2020-2022. When she learned that the property owners planned to remove the huge tree, she immediately began tacking large pieces of canvas to the trunk and making relief prints with a paint roller. Murray made as many as she could and offered commissioned prints of the bark in various sizes and colors through social media. The tree was deemed a safety hazard due to its massive size and proximity to homes. There was suspicion of widespread rot and hollow limbs. Upon being cut down, however, it was plain to see that the massive cross-section of the stump (10 feet across in places), had no rot.
It was healthy. It is a huge loss. Murray is planning a large installation showcasing her tree prints and tree drawings as soon as she finds a venue with adequate wall space.
“I’m so grateful for the wonder, beauty, and income this tree gave me. Thank you, healthy giant, for showing me that money can grow on trees. I will never forget you and never stop sharing your inspiration and value.” -Madeleine Murray
